Activities of the ETIP SNET Working Groups for 2019

ETIP SNET is organized in five Working Groups (WG), covering the main and focal aspect of the ETIP SNET platform, devoted to the transition toward a decarbonized energy system.

  • WG1 – Reliable, economic and efficient smart grid system;
  • WG2 – Storage technologies and sector interfaces;
  • WG3 – Flexible Generation;
  • WG4 – Digitisation of the electricity system and Customer participation;
  • WG5 – Innovation implementation in the business environment.

Each WG [i] is structured in a number of Experts, ranging from around 20 to 60 members (periodically upgraded), coordinated by a Chair and two Co-Chairs subject to rotation according to the  ETIP SNET rules. The more recent changing concerned the Chair off the WG2 and one Co-Chairs of WG 1, 3 and 5. Here we present the activities foreseen in each Working Group for 2019.

Common work of the ETIP SNET WGs during 2019

Each WG is engaged in  some common Topics of the ETIP SNET Action Plan for 2019, and has elaborated a proper warplane to move its activity accordingly. The contribution of each WGs depends on the competence and skill of its Experts. Some WG has been structured in “Task Forces”, devoted to specific Topics to make it contribution more effective. The main fields of common work include:

  • Supporting the diffusion of the Vision at 2050, elaborated during the 2018;
  • Elaborating a R&I Roadmap for 2010-2030;
  • Elaborating the Implementation Plan (IP) to implement the RM for the years 2020-2023;
  • Contribution to Project monitoring and Regional Workshop. This important Topic is finalized to the contribution at Regional Workshops with intervention in the specific fields of operation of each WG;

The above Topics are faced by organising periodical web meetings and focused physical meetings, usually in occasion of relevant events of dissemination also according to the deadline of the milestones of the  ETIP SNET Action Plan for 2019

Furthermore there is the intention to organize a round table at international level, with a representatives from ISGAN (delegation from India);
  • Contribution to Project monitoring and Regional Workshops: Coordinated by Task Force B
  • White Papers (WP): This Topic is coordinated by the Task Force C. A WP on “Holistic architecture” is almost concluded and a second one on “TSO-DSO coordinated grid planning” has been finalized in structure and contents. Two more WPs on “Energy Sector Interfaces” and “Measurement Infrastructure for Optimal Network Operations” have been planned.
  • Upcoming physical meetings: March 2019 in Rome (General meeting); June and November 2019 (Back-to-back with Roadmap Workshops).

WG2

  • Internal structure and other specific Topics: The creation of an internal structure (e.g. in Task Forces) is one of the priority of the WG to improve a more efficient cooperation with the ETIP SNET. Other priorities are concerning the renew the WG2 experts, a knowledge creation and improvement inside the WG and enabling the information exchange to facilitate the preparation of joint project proposals among WG2 Members and with other organisations (EERA JP Smart Grids, EERA JP Storage);
  • New Roadmap and IP: Physical meetings will be scheduled according deadlines with the purpose of agreeing on final comment. The specific input from WG2 is expected by members between  February 18thand march 10th;
  • Monitoring exercise and Regional Workshops: The WG ensured its effort in Project monitoring and the active participation to the upcoming Regional Workshops for 2019 and 2020;
  • Diffusion activity: The WG will continue in the elaboration of an internal newsletter to improve the communication of ETIP SNET activities to WG2 Experts (published twice a year). The first newsletter included: recommendations from the Projects and conclusions from the roundtables of the RW held in 2018; the main discussions and decisions taken during the 10th ETIP SNET Governing Board Meetings; an updating about the upcoming storage events in 2019; 2 Annexes with PowerPoint presentation used during the ETIP SNET’s Workshops and CVs of WG2 experts;
  • White Papers (WP): The WG is strengthening the cooperation with WG1 to deliver a joint paper which is now in the WG1 pipeline about ‘Energy Sector Interfaces’. In the meantime  the WG will promote the Identification of papers of interest for ETIP SNET and the WG Members and launching cooperation with EASE and other stakeholders for the preparation of new WG2 white papers;
  • Upcoming physical meetings: WG2 will soon organize at least one physical meeting, mainly with informative and organizational purposes.

  • Diffusion activity: The diffusion activity will consist in some presentation of the ETIP SNET activity at sectorial conferences and Workshops.
  • White Papers (WP): The draft of a joint paper “Flexible Power Generation in a Decarbonizing Europe” is in progress. The paper gives an overview of the power generation technologies today, the European targets with regard to “flexible generation” and outlook for a power generation in a decarbonizing Europe. All WG members contribute to the paper according to their specific technological skill.
  • Upcoming physical meetings: Next physical meeting will be hosted by Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland. The date of the meeting is not yet fixed.

WG4

  • Internal structure and other specific Topics: The WG has confirmed its structure in three Task Forces (although their title may be readjusted to fit with the ETIP SNET Action Plan for 2019): TF1 “Digital Technologies (enablers)”, TF2 “Digital Use Cases (services)”,TF3 “Digital Cyber Security (Robust)”. Specific topics for the 2019 are the identification Top 3 to 5 Big Digital ambitious Projects for the FP Horizon Europe, to provide advising inputs about the Digital Platforms to EC and respond to specific Digital recommendations requests from EC;
  • New Roadmap and IP: The process of gathering comments are led by the two Vice-Chairs and it will done according to the scheduled calendar defined by the GB;

WG5

  • Internal structure and other specific Topics: WG5 is planning to reorganize its work in sub-WG topics and, subsequently, the Experts in subgroups on the basis of the analysis of scientific work, the necessary activities in the framework of the annual plan and related studies, in order to better contribute to the ETIP SNET Action Plan for 2019.
  • Contribution to ETIP SNET activity: The WG will ensure its contribution to the ETIP SNET activity in line with its own competences and/or the specific competence of the subgroups, that are not strictly focused to specific sectors like the other ETIP SNET WGs, with a particular eye for the business environment.
  • Monitoring exercise and Regional Workshops: The contribution of the WG5 in RW started in 2018 with the introduction in the programme of a special section dedicated to the analysis of the presented Projects in terms of classification according to the type and users of the results, the development stages of the generated commercial products, the application of a Lean Canvas and entrepreneur- business plan that focuses on problems, solutions, key metrics and competitive advantages. The analysis was concluded by identifying the degree of innovation and the capacity of the consortia to take their results into the market. This section aimed at summarising the main conclusion and listing of some recommendation in relation to the presented Project. WG5 will continue this contribution in 2019 and 2020 by strengthening the approach of project consortia with more innovation in identifying exploitation paths of achieved results and in building the innovation potential of a Project.
  • Cooperation with JRC: Project repository, multifunctional platform: JRC agreed to work closely with WG5 to develop the project repository/platform. In the SETIS website a new section dedicated to displaying projects’ information similar to the NER300 section will be developed. The information will consist of output documents, placed together with some meta-information, presented to the user with a search mechanism similar to the NER300 section with additional features.
