The ETIP SNET WG4 ā Digitalization of the Energy System and Customer Participation, is to release a report on how to address the use and impact of Information and Communication technologies as a pervasive tool along the entire value chain of the power generation, transportation and use, as well as the enabling of customer participation.
In the future smart energy system, we will observe, monitor, control, enable and protect the energy supply and use. The communication layer is a pillar of the energy system and radically changes the relation between the final user and the energy system. Advanced meters and modern appliances trigger the potential of active demand-response and enable new services for the energy user. Customer participation in all stages of the development and expansion of the energy system is favored by digital tools ranging from participative geographical systems to web portals and social media. Internet of Things (IoT) Industrial Internet of things (IIoT), big data, blockchain, digital twin technology, all applied to the system, changes its planning and operation and transforms the energy market. In summary, it will mean the digital transformation of the energy system.
The widespread use of these digital technologies however needs to be accompanied by suitable measures for data and information protection from malicious intrusions and attacks, (cybersecurity) and uncontrolled use of customer data.
WG4 has addressed and described the digital development and its impact on the energy system in a 180 page technical document aimed at engineers and experts in the energy sector due to be released on the ETIP SNET website in late September/early October. A shorter edition will follow aimed at policymakers and energy stakeholders at large.
